Den “Gathering”

Monday, May 5

6:30PM in Room 25 at Pennekamp

We will meet for approximately one hour to begin (and possibly complete) a group poster for a Leave No Trace presentation at the May Pack meeting. Everyone is invited to participate. Please read through the Leave No Trace frontcountry guidelines with your son that the he can think about what will be represented on the poster.

Den Meeting

Monday, May 19

6:30PM in Pennekamp Cafetorium

Regular den meeting where we will focus on activities that revolve around the Leaf it to Cubs theme. Finish Leave No Trace poster, if necessary.

Your son is welcome to contribute $1 at each meeting to the den fund.  The money should be earned by the boys by doing simple chores around the house and will be used for a pizza party when the marble jar is full.

Also, please bring your Bear books and belt loop sheet so we can update the Den chart for any electives, belt loops or Achievements that may have been completed. Please note that this will be the last update of the year. At the May Pack meeting, our boys will be graduating to Webelos.

Also, please see the Pack 759 website for information regarding Friends of Scouting donations.

Cub Scout resident summer camp at Forest Lawn Scout Reservation, Camp Pepperdine will be from August 3 to August 9 this year and deposits of $75 per scout were due by March 31. I believe that there is still room. So if you are interested in attending, please let me know.. Lots of rank appropriate activities are planned including swimming, archery, bb-guns, volleyball as well as activities to assist in completing Bear requirements and Webelo activity badges.

If you are interested in Cub Scout day camp at Cabrillo Beach, it will be from July 14 through 18. Early bird sign up is due by April 30.

Camping Basics

At the October 15 meeting, I handed out a sheet with some camping basics. Please take the time to review each of the areas on the sheet with your Scout. He should know these and practice these on every Scout outing he attends.

  • Frontcountry guidelines for the Leave No Trace Award. Boys should remember, understand and practice the following principles as part of earning the LNT award. “I promise to apply the Leave No Trace frontcountry principles wherever I go”:
    • Plan ahead
    • Stick to trails
    • Manage your pet
    • Leave what you find
    • Respect for visitors
    • Trash your trash

  • Learn about the 10 essential items you need for a campout. Assemble your own kit of essential items. Explain why each item is “essential.”
    • First aid kit
    • Filled water bottle
    • Flashlight
    • Trailfood
    • Sunscreen
    • Whistle
    • Map and compass
    • Rain gear
    • Pocket knife
    • Matches or fire starters
  • Follow the buddy system. Explain how the buddy system works and why it is important to you to follow it. Tell what to do if you are lost.
    • Everyone has a buddy
    • Your buddy goes everywhere with you and you go everywhere with him.
    • Know where your buddy is at all times.
    • The buddy system is important. If you get hurt or lost, your buddy will be able to help you. Two people can often solve a problem better than one

2007-2008 Den 3 Plan

We now have a den plan for the year. Note the following:

  • The schedule is designed to help the boys complete the Bear rank by the Blue & Gold Banquet on March 8, 2008.
  • More detailed agendas for each meeting will be determined as we progress throughout the year.
  • The achievements and electives listed on the calendar are meant to be used a guidelines to help all the boys complete the Bear rank by March. Additional activities will be included as we go along.
  • In addition, boys are encouraged to obtain the Religious Emblem of your faith
  • As a den we will also encourage completing the requirements to obtain the Leave No Trace Award and Outdoor Activity Award.
