Uniform

The boys have a choice of uniforms to wear. They can continue to wear their blue Cub Scout uniform or wear the khaki Boy Scout uniform (blue shoulder loops). This is a family decision, so please do what you feel is appropriate. There is no rush and the boys can switch to khaki at any time.

  • Blue uniform - Advantages are that if it are that for now the boys can continue to wear the badges they’ve earned through Bear (Bobcat, Wolf, Bear badge, arrow points). Also delays purchase of new uniform ($$) assuming they are not already growing out of it.

  • Khaki uniform - Advantages are that the uniform is closer to Boy Scout. But like a Boy Scout uniform, the boy can’t wear any badges other than the last rank earned (Bear). No Bobcat, Wolf or arrow points. Provides room to grow into for now, but will likely outgrow when they “sprout up” in a couple of years.

General Webelos Guidance

Similar to merit badges earned in Boy Scouts, Activity Badges help contribute to your Son's advancement within Webelos. As part of our fall parent meeting, we will go over some of the specifics as to how the Webelos program works.  In the meantime, here is some initial guidance:

  • Parents should read pages 1 to 22 of the Webelos handbook.  This will give you some overall guidance and this is also the first advancement opportunity your son will have for the year.  Once completed, please sign off on page 49 of your son’s Webelos handbook.

  • As in the Wolf and Bear ranks, the Webelos Scout will do some of the requirements for the activity badges at home with his parents.  However, the Webelos Scout, will have the requirements signed off by a den leader or badge counselor (an adult who may lead a group or all of the boys in completing a particular activity badge).

  • For any activity badges that your son may work on over the summer, please be sure to have you and your son read the pages in his Webelo’s handbook following the requirements for that badge.  This will help provide him complete the requirements and help you provide guidance.

  • As a suggestion for keeping track of summer activities, I provided each of you with a journal for your son to write down some of the activities that might complete a requirement for a particular badge.  When your son is writing down things that you think would qualify for Webelo requirements, please help him try to be specific so that he can share his journal with one of the leaders for sign off in his book. I understand that some parents are also planning to use this as a journal to help practice writing skills and as a reading log, etc.  These are great ideas!

  • Please be sure to keep any projects that your son might do over the summer (i.e. worksheet showing meal plans for a week as part of the Fitness badge requirements).  Not only will these be presented to a leader for sign off, they can be presented at a den meeting to share activities that your son completed over the summer.

There is a lot to absorb with this transition to Webelos.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by email or on my cell phone at 310-850-5076.

Cub Scout resident summer camp at Forest Lawn Scout Reservation, Camp Pepperdine will be from August 3 to August 9 this year and deposits of $75 per scout were due by March 31. I believe that there is still room. So if you are interested in attending, please let me know.. Lots of rank appropriate activities are planned including swimming, archery, bb-guns, volleyball as well as activities to assist in completing Bear requirements and Webelo activity badges.

If you are interested in Cub Scout day camp at Cabrillo Beach, it will be from July 14 through 18.

Camping Basics

At the October 15 meeting, I handed out a sheet with some camping basics. Please take the time to review each of the areas on the sheet with your Scout. He should know these and practice these on every Scout outing he attends.

  • Frontcountry guidelines for the Leave No Trace Award. Boys should remember, understand and practice the following principles as part of earning the LNT award. “I promise to apply the Leave No Trace frontcountry principles wherever I go”:
    • Plan ahead
    • Stick to trails
    • Manage your pet
    • Leave what you find
    • Respect for visitors
    • Trash your trash

  • Learn about the 10 essential items you need for a campout. Assemble your own kit of essential items. Explain why each item is “essential.”
    • First aid kit
    • Filled water bottle
    • Flashlight
    • Trailfood
    • Sunscreen
    • Whistle
    • Map and compass
    • Rain gear
    • Pocket knife
    • Matches or fire starters
  • Follow the buddy system. Explain how the buddy system works and why it is important to you to follow it. Tell what to do if you are lost.
    • Everyone has a buddy
    • Your buddy goes everywhere with you and you go everywhere with him.
    • Know where your buddy is at all times.
    • The buddy system is important. If you get hurt or lost, your buddy will be able to help you. Two people can often solve a problem better than one

2008-2009 Den 3 Plan

In late August or early September, we will have a parent meeting and our first den meeting with the start of the new school year.  As part of this meeting, we will go over some of the specifics as to how the Webelos program works as well as meeting schedule and other items as necessary. More information to come later in the summer.
